To The Attention of Our Newly Registered Transfer Undergraduate / Vocational Students
In order to determine the English proficiency level of students, first, the English Placement Test is administered. Those who score at least 69.50 on the English Placement Test are entitled to take the Proficiency in English Exam (PIE). UNDERGRADUATE/VOCATIONAL SCHOOL students who obtain at least 64.50 on the PIE Exam qualify to continue their studies in their departments/programs. Students who obtain less than the abovementioned scores in the PIE are enrolled in the preparatory program.
EXAM SCHEDULE
(ALL EXAMS WILL BE CONDUCTED ON THE IUE CAMPUS)
YOU WILL RECEIVE A SHORT TEXT MESSAGE (SMS) WITH DETAILS ABOUT THE EXAM ROOMS ON 16 OCTOBER.
English Placement Test exam date: 19 October (09.30-10.30)
Important!: Students who score 69.50 or above on the Placement Test will take the Proficiency in English Exam.
Proficiency in English Exam dates: 19 October (12.30 – 16.30) – 20 October (09.30 – 14.00)
Important!: Students who score 64.50 or above on the Proficiency in English Exam will study in their departments.
***Students who qualify to take the Proficiency in English Exam (19-20 October) will be announced on our SFL website (https://sfl.ieu.edu.tr/en/announcements/type/all) at 12.00 (19 OCTOBER). PLEASE READ THE ANNOUNCEMENTS CAREFULLY!

ENGLISH PLACEMENT TEST
English Placement Test consists of 75 questions and lasts 60 minutes.
This multiple-choice test provides four alternatives to choose from for each question.
Wrong answers do not cancel out correct answers.
Candidates are asked to bring a fine lead pencil and an eraser since optical forms will be used in the exam.
It is mandatory for candidates to bring a valid picture ID with them (student ID or any form of identification card). Students without a valid ID will not be able to take the exam.
Electronic equipment (mobile phones, smart watches, AirPods ve EarBuds, etc.) should be turned off and will be collected by the invigilator. All electronic equipment will be returned to the candidates back at the end of the exam. Mobile phones cannot be used even to check the time. Trying to use mobile phones will be considered as an attempt to copy.
Candidates should arrive at the university at least 30 minutes before the test begins.
The test results will be announced on the same day on http://sfl.ieu.edu.tr.
Those students who score below 69.50 in the English Placement Test will be enrolled in the Preparatory Program.
PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH EXAM
PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH WRITTEN COMPONENTS
The written part of the PIE exam is conducted in three sessions.
SESSION I: INTEGRATED WRITING
This part of the exam is 80 minutes long.
PART A: Filling in a table while reading
PART B: Filling in a table while listening
PART C: Writing an essay (275 – 400 words)
SESSION II: LISTENING AND READING
This part of the exam is 105 minutes long and there are two sections: Listening and Reading.
Listening (15 items, 15 points, 35 minutes)
PART 1: Matching (with one extra option) 5 items
PART 2: Multiple Choice (4 options) 5 items
PART 3: Multiple Choice (4 options) 5 items
Reading (30 items, 30 points, 70 minutes)
PART 1: Matching (2 extra options) (6 items)
PART 2: Insertion (2 extra options) (5 items
PART 3: Multiple Choice (4 options) (8 items)
PART 4: Multiple Choice (4 options) (11 items)
SESSION III: USE OF ENGLISH
This part of the exam is 60 minutes long.
25 items, 25 points, 60 minutes
PART 1: 2 Cloze Tests (with 4 options) (10 items)
PART 2: Vocabulary (with 4 options) (5 items)
PART 3: Word Formation (with 4 options) (5 items)
PART 4: Sentence Transformation (with 4 options) (5 items)
PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH SPEAKING EXAM
SESSION IV: SPEAKING
The speaking component of the PIE is a 10-minute structured interview between an interlocutor and a candidate.
The speaking exam is audio-visually recorded.
The speaking component of the PIE exam accounts for 20% of the total PIE grade.
The speaking exam is composed of the following parts:
PART 1: Question and answer
PART 2: Role-play
PART 3: Decision-making
PART 4: Extended Individual long turn
UNDERGRADUATE/VOCABTIONAL students who score 64.50 in the PIE (80% of the written component and 20% of the speaking component) are qualified to continue their studies in their departments/programs.
PIE Exam Results will be announced on http://sfl.ieu.edu.tr, on October 20, 2020 after 17:30 p.m.
WARNINGS and REMINDERS:
- It is MANDATORY for students to bring a valid picture ID with them (student ID or any form of identification card). Students without a valid ID will not be able to take the exam.
- Students are asked to bring a fine lead pencil and an eraser since optic forms will be used in the exam. Exchange of pencils and/or erasers during the exam will be regarded as an attempt to copy.
- No one else, besides the students and the staff on duty, will be allowed in the rooms or halls where the exam is taking place.
- Students are asked to check the lists that show their names and exam rooms before the exam. Therefore, in order to do this, students should arrive at school at least 30 minutes before the exam begins.
- Electronic equipment (mobile phones, smart watches, AirPods ve EarBuds, etc.) should be turned off and kept out of reach during the exam.
- Mobile phones cannot be used even to check the time. Trying to use mobile phones will be considered as an attempt to copy.
- Students will not be able to leave the room during the first 30 minutes of the exam.
- Students will not be able to leave the room to go to the bathroom or for any other reason during the exam.
- Students are allowed to bring water with them if they wish.
- Talking/asking questions during the exam is prohibited and will be regarded as an attempt to copy.
