Welcome
Overview
At Izmir University of Economics, students not only learn to use English—the language of instruction—effectively in academic and professional life, but also have the opportunity to expand their communication skills through compulsory second foreign language courses.
Supported by advanced learning technologies and participatory teaching methods, this process encourages active student engagement and provides graduates with a strong foundation to build integrated professional networks in a global context. Within the undergraduate curriculum, students choose one of the following languages offered by the School of Foreign Languages: French, Italian, German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese.
Program Structure
The compulsory second foreign language program spans two years and is delivered through courses offered each semester. Classes are held four hours per week, ensuring a structured and continuous learning process.
Assessment consists of one midterm exam, two quizzes, one oral exam, one final exam, and, for 3rd and 4th year students, an additional presentation. Each course carries 3 local credits (4 ECTS).
Learning Goals
By the end of the two-year program (224 hours in total), students are expected to:
- Read, write, and comprehend texts in the target language with confidence,
- Express themselves effectively on current topics as well as in relation to their own field of study.
The program is designed in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Accordingly, students who successfully complete the program are expected to reach level A2 by the end of the second year. This proficiency can be formally certified through internationally recognized language examinations.
