Introduction

At İzmir University of Economics, our students not only learn to use English, the university’s medium of instruction, effectively in their daily and professional lives, but also have the opportunity to expand their communication skills through second foreign language courses. By employing advanced educational technologies and interactive teaching methods, we aim to actively engage students in the learning process and provide them with a solid foundation to establish globally integrated professional relationships.

To achieve this goal, undergraduate students are required to select one of the following languages—French, Italian, German, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese—as part of the mandatory second foreign language courses offered by the School of Foreign Languages.

Program Overview

• Mandatory second foreign language education is a two-year program delivered through semester-based courses.
• Classes are conducted for four hours per week.
• Assessments include one midterm exam, two quizzes, one oral exam, one final exam, and (for third- and fourth-year students) a presentation.
• Each course is worth 3 local credits (4 ECTS).

Objectives
By the end of the 224-hour, two-year program, students are expected to achieve the following competencies:

• The ability to comfortably read, write, and comprehend texts in the target language.
• The ability to express themselves effectively on current topics and issues related to their professional fields.

The program is structured in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Students who successfully complete the program by the end of their second year are expected to reach the A2 level of proficiency. They can certify this level by taking official proficiency exams in the respective language.
