CCPL in our institution was established to provide in-service support and development to enable English teachers to achieve full potential, operating on the premise that teachers who continue to learn are more effective. Since the school was established in 2001, CCPL has been organizing ‘structured’ developmental activities for the teaching staff. Workshops and seminars are among such activities.
Workshops in the school are designed by taking the needs of the current teaching staff into consideration. Namely, the ‘realistic’ classroom teaching related issues are addressed during the workshop presentations, and the attendee teachers are provided with practical teaching tips which they can apply in their own classrooms. Regular teacher feedback on the content of workshops is obtained to plan future workshops tailored to the expectations of the teaching staff.
A minimum two workshops are offered within a module for the preparatory program teachers (intramodular workshops); and also a minimum one workshop is offered at the end of each module (intermodular workshops).
As for the workshops designed for the Freshman and Second Foreign Language Program teachers, the number and content are determined based on teachers’ needs and expectations from CCPL.
The workshops can take one of the following forms:
workshops presented by guest speakers.
INSPIRING EDUCATORS: EXPLORING THE WORLD OF GENERATIVE AI
Ayşenur Küçükboyacı & Dr. Haldun Kaya
This exciting and hands-on short course is crafted for language educators who want to enhance their expertise in using generative AI tools. Whether you're looking to energize your lessons or explore innovative methods to boost student productivity, this course will introduce you to a variety of creative AI platforms. You’ll learn how to seamlessly integrate these tools to spark greater engagement, critical thinking, and autonomy in your students, all within your own context.
As part of the course, you will also evaluate your own AI integration through a particularly-prepared rubric, reflect on the impact of AI on your lessons, and observe your peers as they do the same. You'll have the opportunity to give and receive constructive feedback from your colleagues, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to use AI effectively in your teaching. Here's what you'll gain:
INTRODUCTON TO TEACHER RESEARCH
Dr. Simon Mumford
This course is for teachers who want to investigate some aspect of their teaching in-depth in a course that will continue over the academic year. No previous experience of research is needed. After identifying a puzzle, something that interests you about your teaching (not necessarily a problem), you will choose and implement a data collection method(s), which could involve student interviews, surveys or observations.
In the second term, you’ll have the opportunity to analyse the data using qualitative techniques, by identifying emerging themes and patterns, especially ones that are unexpected. The final stage involves reflecting on findings, i.e. understanding what they mean for you and your teaching. These will be written up into a report that also covers the research introduction, a short literature review, and a brief description of the method and analysis.
The goal is to equip you with an understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of teacher research. You will gain an understanding of
INTEGRATING UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS INTO TEACHING
Mary Jane Özkurkudis
This course is tailored for instructors who aim to deepen their understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and explore methods for integrating them into their teaching. Participants will examine the significance of the UN SDGs and strategize ways to effectively integrate these goals into their educational practices. The course will concentrate on three specific SDGs, providing examples of how they can be integrated within lesson plans. Participants will engage in discussions, collaborate on designing tasks, and have the opportunity to deliver a lesson that incorporates an SDG.
The primary aims of the course are as follows:
Gamification for Language Educators: Engaging and Motivating Learners
Antonio Ramirez
Gamification for Language Educators is a specialized course designed to equip teachers in the School of Foreign Languages with the knowledge and skills to implement gamification strategies in their language teaching practice. This course explores the principles of gamification and focuses on practical applications within the Blackboard Learn LMS. By the end of the course, teachers will be equipped with the tools necessary to create dynamic and effective language courses using gamified approaches.
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
define gamification and its relevance to language education,
adapt game design principles to the design of languages courses within the Blackboard Learn LMS,
design interactive and engaging language learning activities using gamification elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards in Blackboard Learn,

1. "Educational Technologies for Language Teachers"
Trainer: Dr. Haldun Kaya
The availability of advanced technologies has already put an end to rote memorization and many other lower cognitive skills in language learning. With various tools, learners could easily find the meaning of an unfamiliar word, translate or paraphrase a text, find the answers to reading comprehension questions or get an answer key to any given grammar exercise. This requires us to move towards higher order thinking skills in language learning such as analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating. This course aims to help teachers merge ChatGPT with various web 3.0 tools in their teaching. We will explore the ways in which our learners can maximize their cognitive potential when learning English.
There will be 5 sessions in which a different web tool is used with ChatGPT. The instructors will be introduced new ways and tools in teaching English and implement them in their own teaching. There will also be a peer observation cycle through which each instructor will receive feedback from a different peer on each lesson.
2. "Gamification for Language Educators: Engaging and Motivating Learners"
Trainer: Antonio Ramirez
Gamification for Language Educators is a specialized course designed to equip teachers in the School of Foreign Languages with the knowledge and skills to implement gamification strategies in their language teaching practice. This course explores the principles of gamification and focuses on practical applications within the Blackboard Learn LMS. Participants will learn how to design interactive and engaging learning experiences, leveraging gamification elements to enhance student motivation, participation, and language acquisition. By the end of the course, teachers will be equipped with the tools necessary to create dynamic and effective language courses using gamified approaches.
The course also has an observation component which involves 2 peer observations based on the mutually agreed observation focus and 1 trainer observation. Both peer and trainer observations can be conducted through sharing Panopto links and/or class visits.
3. "Critical Friends Group"
Trainer: Anita Afacan
Our personal teaching landscape and our beliefs on what it means to be a teacher shape our classroom habits and behaviour. They facilitate our classroom success but can also lead to obstacles and challenges. In this course, together we will explore our beliefs and use them to help work through any problems we may face. Course participants will share their teaching landscapes through discussion and list any situations or challenges that they are facing. Then with the help of others experiencing similar things, they will embark on a journey of discovery, looking for solutions, testing them and reflecting on their level of success.
Participants will be encouraged to work collaboratively with the whole group and closely with one or two other teachers on one particular area of teaching.
By the end of the course, participants will have evaluated their own teacher beliefs and habits and participated in a process of testing out alternative ways to approach activities in the classroom.
4. "Teachers' Toolkit"
Trainer: Anita Afacan, Funda Çetin, Anotnio Ramirez, Pınar Acar, Seher Kosacı, Bahar Gün, Tuğçe Erkmen, Nilcan Yavuz, Necan Saygaç
The "Teachers' Toolkit" professional training offers in-service language instructors at higher education essential strategies to optimize classroom interactions and improve student outcomes. The training emphasizes selecting appropriate interaction patterns, such as pair and group work, while balancing student-centered teaching (SST) with teacher talk time (TTT) to ensure effective engagement. Giving and checking instructions focuses on clear, structured activity planning, including allocating time efficiently, providing communicative purposes, and maintaining a smooth flow between heads-up and heads-down activities. Checking understanding of both lexical and grammatical items ensures students grasp core concepts, while error correction and feedback address ways to monitor progress and offer immediate or delayed responses. Strategies for peer and self-correction are covered, alongside preparing remedial work to address common student challenges. Finally, the training highlights effective methods for presenting target language, from pre-teaching key vocabulary and focusing on pronunciation to using drilling techniques. By integrating these skills, instructors can enhance lesson delivery, foster active student participation, and create a more dynamic learning environment.
