ENG 102 – ACADEMIC SKILLS IN ENGLISH II – EXEMPTION EXAM
The ENG 102 exemption exam will be held on campus on 13.02.2023.
School of Foreign Languages Directorate will be announcing the exam date and places at a later date at https://sfl.ieu.edu.tr/tr/announcements/type/all.
The ENG 102 exemption exam is designed to assess students’ proficiency in English to a level deemed appropriate to follow English medium undergraduate instruction without the support of the freshman English programme.
The ENG 102 exemption exam features listening, reading, vocabulary and speaking (presentation) sections.
The listening section is worth 30 points and features a lecture or an interview on an academic topic, approximately ten minutes in length and played twice. Students respond to ten multiple choice questions with three options.
The reading section contains an academic text which is worth 30 points. Students answer fifteen multiple choice questions with four options each.
The vocabulary section is worth 10 points and contains two parts, 5 points each. In the first part, students select the correct word form to complete a paragraph containing five blanks. In the second part, students complete the sentences with the most suitable word from four options.
The speaking section is worth 30 points. Students are expected to deliver a three-four minute oral presentation on one of the topics they choose among the three options given before. They should prepare their presentation according to the grading criteria and be ready on the exam day to deliver it. Students are NOT ALLOWED TO USE POWERPOINT in their presentations. They can only have cue cards with key words on them to remind themselves the content of their speech. No sentences are allowed on cue cards. The grading criteria for this section is over 30 points and is shared with the students beforehand.
